Course outline icon

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) are the primary heating technology that will enable the UK to meet its decarbonisation targets, offering key business opportunities for heating installers now and in the future. The government has pledged to deliver 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028, rising to 1.9 million by 2035.

An air source heat pump (ASHP) extracts heat from the outdoor air and transfers it indoors, warming water to provide central heating and hot water. Heat pumps use technology similar to that found in a refrigerator or air conditioner, essentially in reverse, compressing and expanding refrigerant to absorb and release heat energy.

Heat pumps are powered by electricity and are at least three times more efficient than a gas boiler. Some heat pumps can also be used for cooling, but these are not commonly found in UK homes.

Yes, air source heat pumps require regular servicing to maintain their efficiency and longevity. A typical service will include cleaning filters, inspecting refrigerant levels, checking electrical components and ensuring the system operates optimally. Servicing intervals may vary but are often recommended annually.
