Solar Thermal Course Information

This Domestic Solar Thermal Installation Course delivers the knowledge and skills required to design, install, commission and maintain solar thermal systems in residential settings.

During the course, you will receive practical training, including work on:

  • Purpose-built solar thermal rigs; and
  • Live equipment within a fully functioning plant room.

You will also cover theory relating to health & safety, industry regulations and best-practice.

At the end of the 3-days, you will undertake a practical, observed assignment and multiple-choice, open-book theory assessment.

On completion of this course, candidates will receive an LCL Awards Level 3 Certificate, which is recognised by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).

FAQs

To enrol on this domestic solar thermal installation course, you need to hold certificates for Level 2/3 SVQ or NVQ in plumbing, heating/ventilation gas or oil, plus the following qualifications:

If you do not hold these qualifications or your certificates are out of date, please enrol on these courses alongside your solar thermal training course. If you have any questions, give us a quick call on 01969 666111 and speak to our training department.

The course consists of 3 days in-centre training.

Successful candidates will receive their LCL Awards certificate approximately four to six weeks following completion of the course.

What's included icon

This course focuses on the predominant North European fluid filled, indirect solar water heating systems. It does not cover all possible variants of this subject and manufacturer’s support and guidance should always be sought when fitting equipment.

The following topics will be addressed, as well as many more:

  • Regulations and standards.
  • Solar thermal collector types.
  • Solar heated storage types (storage cylinders).
  • Solar primary system types.
  • Basic solar heating system design and integration.
  • External and internal site survey, installation methods and materials.
  • Filling and commissioning.
  • Solar thermal system servicing and fault finding.

Solar thermal panels absorb warmth from the sun and use it to heat water for bathing, showering and hot taps. The ideal add-on to other small-scale renewables, such as air source heat pumps and solar PV, solar thermal helps to reduce the overall energy demand of buildings, bringing them closer to net zero energy consumption.

Solar thermal systems use sunlight to heat a fluid (usually a special heat transfer fluid or water) in solar collectors. These collectors absorb solar radiation and convert it into heat energy. The heated fluid is then circulated through a system, transferring the heat to a storage tank or directly into a building's heating or hot water system.

Solar thermal and photovoltaic (PV) systems both harness solar energy but serve different purposes -  solar thermal systems are designed for heat production, while photovoltaic systems generate electricity.

Solar thermal systems are primarily used to heat water and for industrial processes. Solar PV systems generate electricity for homes, businesses and utility-scale power plants.

GTEC offers courses covering various renewable energy technologies, including both solar thermal and PV systems, allowing learners to understand the distinctions and applications of each.
