DIY enthusiasts can now access free* online insulation training, delivered by leading provider, GTEC.
According to figures from the Energy Saving Trust, nearly 8 million homes are currently under-insulated, leading to high fuel bills and cold residents. Funded by the government, GTEC’s new courses, which cover all types of insulation – walls, ceilings and floors - plus draught proofing measures, are ideal for practically minded homeowners, landlords or tradespeople looking to add home energy efficiency improvements to their offering.
Griff Thomas, MD for GTEC, said: “The UK has some of the most inefficient housing stock in Europe, and if we are going to help residents keep warm whilst reducing their fuel bills, then we need to do something about this, fast. Many energy efficiency measures are extremely cost-effective and relatively easy to install – enough loft insulation for the average home, for example, costs less than £100, but will pay for itself several times during its lifespan.
“Our new online courses can be taken by anyone interested in home energy efficiency improvements, helping more people cut household bills and enhance the benefits of low carbon technologies, such as heat pumps. A heat pump, or any heating technology for that matter, will work better and cost less to run in a property that has taken steps to prevent heat loss.”
While candidates can complete the courses purely online, GTEC has recently constructed an in-centre bungalow at its HQ in Hawes, North Yorkshire, for trainees looking for practical guidance on energy efficiency measures. The ‘house’ has been used in some of the videos which accompany the courses, showcasing the installation of all the insulation and draught proofing measures covered.

About the training:
All of the energy efficiency courses are delivered online at a pace to suit the learner. Trainees have the option to attend GTEC’s centre in Hawes to gain some practical experience on its energy efficient bungalow – this is not an essential requirement, however.
Insulation and draught proofing training:
For a limited time only, GTEC can cover 100%* of the cost of insulation and draught proofing training, thanks to government funding.
Training is designed for anyone; from homeowner DIYers looking to save on their energy bills, to heating engineers and other trades people wishing to help their customers make their homes warmer, cost-less and be more suitable for technologies like heat pumps.
Energy efficiency courses currently available:
- Introduction to Insulation, overview of the different insulation types and their benefits.
- Cold Roof Insulation – insulation between roof rafters
- Warm Room Insulation – surface insulation, using boards
- Floor insulation – under floorboards or over boarding solid floors
- Draught Proofing – identification of draughts and measures to prevent them
